Housemarque’s Megaman Anyone?! (First Impressions)


Housemarque has put together what some may call this generation’s Mega Man (at least someone did during my live stream lol). Yes, Mighty No. 9 (even made by an original Mega Man creator) tried to fill those shoes but just wasn’t hot enough for players to actually care for. However, MatterFall may be a better alternative option for fans wanting a more recent version of the game. Check out the launch trailer below.

MatterFall Launch Trailer:

MatterFall is a 2D platformer action-adventure game developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game released August 15th, 2017 exclusively on the PlayStation 4. The game is centered around the female character Avalon Darrow, who is responsible of cleaning the Red Matter out of the city. This is the most story driven information you will receive thus far in the game, leaving me to believe there is no real story driven work past this bit of information you gain just before you reach the title menu of the game.

The game does have a few nice features past the Housemarque signature explosions you find in there game titles. Avalon is equipped with a gun, a dash and the ability to augment herself with secondary weapons and perks if you will. In my play through I was able to gain a grenade launcher, an ability to have a higher probability that Matter Bombs appear (these appear from destroyed enemies and can be shot to create an explosive area-effect on nearby enemies), and I got an ability to extend the duration of my Overcharge. Avalon’s main weapon can be used to kill enemies, reconstruct land masses and free captured civilians. The dash can be used to travel through floors or walls and be used to stun and dodge enemies and their attacks. Check out some gameplay down below.

The game features levels that are broken into 3 stages and than a boss fight which give me personally that signature classic Sonic game feel. The first boss looks similar to a bee and has you dodging fire and Red Matter attacks as it changes its position on the map. There are also of serious of henchmen that appear as you continue dealing damage to the boss.

All in all my first time playing MatterFall was pretty fun and had me enjoying all the shooting and visual effects from my landed shots. The game adds a tactical feel with the augmentations, allowing players to mix and match a 3 piece combination fitting to their play style. I’ll be looking forward to later completing the game and adding a final review in the near future.
